Valeda Photobiomodulation

A newer FDA-cleared light therapy for dry age-related macular degeneration. Non-invasive, delivered in-office, and an option for patients who historically had few.

What it is

Valeda delivers specific wavelengths of yellow, red, and near-infrared light to the eye. The treatment is based on photobiomodulation — the use of light to modulate cellular function. In clinical studies, Valeda has been shown to improve vision in some patients with dry AMD and may slow disease progression.

Who is a candidate

Valeda is FDA-cleared for patients with dry AMD. Our retinal physicians will determine and discuss whether this treatment is appropriate for you.

What to expect

Each treatment session takes about five minutes per eye and is painless. The standard protocol involves a series of treatments delivered over several weeks, with maintenance sessions thereafter.

Cost & insurance

Valeda may be covered or partially covered by insurance. Coverage varies by plan. Our billing team can help answer questions about your specific coverage and any out-of-pocket costs.

If you'd like to be evaluated

Valeda is not yet widely available. We're happy to evaluate patients — including those referred from other practices — to determine whether it's appropriate for them. To inquire, call (315) 445-8166 to schedule a visit.
