After finishing medical school in his hometown in Germany, Dr. Oellers came to the United States as a Max-Kade Fellow to perform research at the renowned Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami. He has then trained at some of the most prestigious ophthalmology institutions in the country. He completed a residency in Ophthalmology at Duke University followed by a 2-year Fellowship in Vitreo-Retinal Disease and Surgery at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear, Harvard Medical School. At Harvard, he was awarded the Thomas J. Madden Fellowship for the outstanding Vitreo-Retinal Surgery Fellow and served as the Chief Fellow.

Dr. Oellers published over 50 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and presented at national and international meetings in the field of vitreoretinal surgery. He has participated as investigator for numerous clinical trials run by the National Eye Institute and the industry. He also serves as a regular reviewer for scientific journals.

Dr. Oellers is Board Certified by the American Board Of Ophthalmology. He is a member of several professional societies including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Retina Specialists and Onondaga County Medical Society.

In addition to this, he serves on the Board of Aurora of Central New York, a local non-profit organization that promotes independence and opportunities for people of all ages with vision or hearing loss.

He is a clinical assistant professor at SUNY Upstate Medical University and is devoted to educating the new generation of ophthalmologists.

During his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his wife and three children. He is an avid athlete as well as sports fan and likes to spend time outdoors in beautiful Central New York.
